2025 Presidential and Congressional Elections

I haven’t seen much about who the ministers will be. Has anyone?

If Kast wins, will all the ministers be from his own party - I suspect if so that will lead to a reasonable low level of competence/experience in some cases: the party just hasn’t been around long enough, I think hasn’t governed before? I think he should announce that he will take a significant number of ministers from the other right wing parties, assuming that’s even allowed. That would help with stability, at least in the early years. If his party ends up with two terms they could change that later for the second term.

Likewise it would nice to hear Jara saying no communists on immigration, crime, security, economy etc.

That’s not how coalition politics works. Cambio por Chile doesn’t have anything close to a legislative majority to get anything passed. He will obviously have to make deals with The Coalition Formerly Known as Chile Vamos in order to get their legislative support. That means dishing out cabinet posts.

@Mendoza

Thanks for your civility and sincerity despite knowing you are not in sympathetic/friendly territory.

Suerte in all your endeavors.

The Grauniad’s take on “far-right” Kast:

… given recent polling, Kast – the son of a Nazi party member

Does that make him a Nazi as well? Probably not, but let’s put that smear in anyway..

…an admirer of the dictator Augusto Pinochet…

Like many Chileans that are too scared to admit to the same sentiments.

…and a staunch Catholic known for his opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage…

And an Anti-Woke Bad Man and religious fanatic to boot!

…is widely expected to rule Chile for the next four years…

Why would the electors vote for this allegedly “Trump-inspired” extremist instead of Commie Jara, who was part of the pathetic Boric government, and promises more of the same? They must be all mad - according to the Guardian.

Much less queues today.

I am on Chile Vision and they are comparing first round vs second round results across specific tables. And comparing results for a set number of locations that they think might predict the result. It’s not looking good for Jara so far, it looks like the polling might have been in the right ballpark.

Live coverage on the front page of https://www.biobiochile.cl/ if you don’t need the non-stop verbiage of the TV commentaries. Looks like 60/40 for Kast, so far.

At the moment (7.03pm) I think Kast has a ~95% chance to win.

Oh wow, just seen that they’ve counted about a quarter of the votes already! Didn’t realize that. I’m surprised they are not celebrating a bit more at the Kast HQ. Chile Vision is calling it already.

The Fat Lady finally sung…

Called it. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

With 95% counted, the numbers are Jara: 41.7%, Kast: 58.3%, Nulls/Blanks: 7.06%.

The Jara and Kast numbers are after the nulls and blanks have been excluded. If we factor them back in, we get:

Jara: 38.76%

Kast: 54.18%

Null/Blanks: 7.06%

Such a spanking win is good for Kast to get his programme through Congress. Parisi is the “kingmaker” with Congress and the Senate split as they are. PDG will need to be compliant lest they lose their right-wing support.

SALUD!!!

And the international anti-Kast media coverage hits its stride with mostly the same bullet points mentioned above in the Guardian article, to which I responded:

The opinologa cited in that Newsweek article is Marta Lagos. The link shows where her political sympathies lie.

Strangely, the deep state outlet NYT was less inflammatory:

Yes, the “sensations” of insecurity. It’s all in our heads.

The “narrative” is an attempt to change perceptions of experienced reality in order to create a false reality.

The commies have always been very good at this.

The only counter to swallowing this disinformation is to use critical thinking. Or even just thinking “How does what they say match up with what I see”

But people, and not just in Chile usually don’t, or won’t , do that. Or if they try, they can arrive at bizarre conclusions…

Does anyone think that Jara was sort of a throwaway candidate? I know there was a primary, but it seems like more prominent names didn’t participate. I’m guessing the general consensus was that there’s no way the left could win this time, so it’s better to send out the sacrificial lamb and wait four years when the pendulum could swing back again. Although, I’m thinking Parisi is going to be strong next time.

On a sort of funny note, I did not realize that our President Elect is our neighbor. I knew he was in the Buin-Paine area, but not just up the road. We drive by there all the time doing errands. Now there are always Carabineros in front of the entrance to the condominium.
