Inviting the members from the previous forum

Just call me payoso eeuunikkei-chet or the flor motuda with bolas-llende without that idiotic whirly-thingy hat of discusschile.net

In the early beginnings of the old forum it was all about helping fellow “gringos” in the chilean “maze”. When I came to Chile it was an invaluable source of information and really helped me understand the many quirks I kept running into. I am sure there are other forums for discussions about religion etc.

hlf, You’ve got a pm.

lostfree, this post is about inviting members from the previous forum which includes thoughts on the previous forum. Religion deserves its own post, why not start a post about religion (I will definitely contribute) and this will continue to be for old forum stuff.

Thanks eeuu, I will begin a new post about this topic so we can keep this post free for discussion about the old forum

I think we should take the time to connect with those we want to maintain contact with in case this board goes down also

I had a couple of accounts over on the old board for a number of years. My first post there was in 2007, I believe. I later posted a lot more under another account and then faded away only to check back every once in a while when Chile made news. I don’t think I actually logged in for several years. I checked back in October and it was gone. I only found this one trying to figure out what happened. I figured either he died, he got into legal problems, or he was the little kid who took his ball and went home.

For me, Charles really turned me off from the forum. I saw megalomaniac tendencies and he seemed like the guy at the end of the bar who had done everything and knew everything. It seemed like he wanted people to bow to him or some crap like that. Me? I had better things to do.

Oh yeah and EEUU, I’m sorry no one came to your defense about reading PMs. Anyone who knows how the software used there worked knew that only those with server access could read PMs(able to process a database dump). Charlie kept that stuff tightly under his grip because he was an IT expert smarter than anyone else on the internet.

And there’s no need for any specialist knowledge, as their (PHPBB) support site and knowledge base is freely available on the Internet, and so it is absolutely clear that the soft is designed to allow only admins (or web host team) to access the DB, and by no means forum moderators can read PM’s.

Nobody’s perfect. I accepted his imperfections because his forum was a gold mine of information AND admin had a great sense of humor, a quick wit, moments of brilliance interspersed with moments of megalomania, as well as a fairly global perspective. He also demonstrated acts of kindness.

His forum was not stifled by political correctness. But he certainly wasn’t as liberal as the illusion I created of him, sliding to an all-time low by banning Patagoniax and Gloria. And then ironically, (karmically?) the whole forum was canceled by a religious extremist.

tiagoabner is relatively easy to find, but according to his NomadList profile he’s back to Brazil. I’m not sure how to contact him though, probably hiring him on Freelancer.com is the only way.

Hello again! Ha, you’re all here (well not quite all)!

It’s interesting to read a vague explanation of what happened – I was guessing that either someone finally annoyed admin enough to press delete after a few pisco sours or he was concerned about some legal problem – but it was an unpleasant surprise to find everything gone one day, on an occasional visit.

Thanks for setting this up. I note that your Ts & Cs refer to “The Company” without saying who that is (is there even a company?). Might it be better to say something like “The Discuss Chile administrators”? I’m not any kind of legal professional, but I do have some layman’s experience with certain legal issues such as copyright and I suspect that it’s better to specify as precisely as practical who the parties are… (I’m sure admin would fill us in!). Saludos!

Re the speculation on the sudden disappearance of the allchile.net forum, this message briefly appeared on the allchile home page:

Pity. Threats, insults and gross language are quite common on internet dialogue here, even in the mainstream news media.

Oh, and welcome to the forum! Good to see another old-timer.

Thanks, @feargle. Ah, you’re here too (I was a bit slow to disentangle your new name; still wondering who chalksquire is…). Seems like I more-or-less nailed what happened. I have a Squeezebox too… Maybe you would get on with an IT-manager friend here who’s into home automation amongst other things…

Welcome @jehturner Ts & Cs have been filled in. We are not a “company”, and this site would not exist if the “other” site was still around.

The purpose of this is to keep the communication lines open, and to have honest discussions about our beloved Chile. I remember clearly in 2010 when the earthquake hit how useful the other forum was to me, and many others, in finding out how some of my family members were doing. We might not have the resources that the other forum admin had but, I think colectively we have a lot of good information that is useful.

Cheers!

Thanks! Good of you to set it up.

Yes, things have come a long way from admin flying around in a small aircraft rescuing people and tracking down who was missing.

Cheers,

James.

I sure miss admin, his sardonic humor, his unique perspective and his hilarious spelling.

I’m pretty sure he was dyslexic which would explain the spelling, but I agree, it’s a shame events conspired to force him to close the Allchile forum, maybe he’ll end up here someday, who knows.
