Probably the biggest own goal in politics since… when Pinochet called the “si / no” election… wow.
I have not been following the process much in the last couple of weeks and I definitely did not expect this.
So, unless I am wrong, we will see a new constitution written by politicians who do not want a new constitution. Most likely ending in an election where the left will want a new rechazo. The tables are certainly turned
It’s…
No. In common with many others, mine’s was a protest vote. And I will probably vote Rechazo when the time comes, regardless of the merits of whatever these consejeros eventually come up with. Chile’s problems are endemic, and won’t be fixed by any amount of Constitutional tinkering.
The continuance of the current system, regardless of the short-term winners and losers will see the country continuing on its downward path. With opposing ideologies, and with neither of them getting what they want by “democratic” means, we may see some sort of catharsis in the not-too-distant future.
An alternative, equally uninspiring view of the future can be seen in the last 10 minutes of this opinion piece by Tomas Mosciatti where he anticipates the current turmoil could continue indefinitely.
Dont think any of the chilezuela/communist concerns were overblown. It took a lot of time and effort and money to get to this point.
It is a pity that so much time and effort and money had to be expended for what? A lot of churn with no substance
There are 33 right wingers elected, and you only need 31 votes to get 3/5. As I understand it, 3/5 is the vote share needed to pass things…I think I read that somewhere…
That means that they will even be able to ignore the most centrist, moderate voice within the right, even if every left winger votes against their proposals.
Does anyone know what happens if Rechazo wins again (please provide source).
Agree…regardless of the content there should never have been a “do over”.
There was agreement to do the constituional convention. Fine done. Then it was voted on and rejected. Should have been fine/done rather than this.
They have already had two shots at grabbing power. The first, the engineered so-called estallido social, failed mainly due to Piñera’s slippery self-preservation efforts.
The second, the Convención Constitucional dog and pony show succeeded in pissing-off the majority of the voters, as expressed in their overwhelming Rechazo vote.
The results of the extreme left’s third and ongoing attempt at regime change, as expressed in last night’s vote imho shows increasing irritation with a political circus that continues to ignore
Chile’s serious problems. Hardly surprising, since the pols provoked (or passively abetted) them in the first place.
I doubt it has been defined what will happen if it rejected again… I guess a new process. Unless the republicans can change the plebiscite to be a) new constitution or b) keep the existing one.
IMO analysis: from the supposedly 80% of the country’s voters who seemingly wanted a new constitution on the heels of the far left planned estallido and the not exactly a landslide commie Boric presidency win TO the sudden “facho pobre” turn with Rechazo and now the Republican and other right CC vote. Is Chile bi-polar?
What was the difference between then and now before the Rechazo and yesterday’s votes…THE VOTE CHANGED FROM VOLUNTARY TO MANDATORY.
All the REAL working people busy with home, family, finances, businesses if a small business owner who are largely apolitical and who stopped voting after it was no longer mandatory saw the results of their not paying attention to the disciplined voting of the left and far left and their indoctrinated kids living off of their sweat and sacrifice with no idea of the real world and voted accordingly when forced to come to the ballot box.
Senator Jaime Guzmán, founder of the UDI and an advocate of “enlightened” capitalism was seen as a serious intellectual, and existential, threat by the Commies. Here’s Boric gloating over a depiction of the dead Senator, complete with bala en la nuca, assasinated by leftwing extremists.
I seriously lost faith with a Chilean pueblo who could elect a person who clearly reveled in the murder of an ideological opponent.
If I were Kast, I would be very careful in future, the left are quite capable of doing the same to him Todo vale, as they say.
I didn’t know the first one was voluntary as I wasn’t paying attention because I hadn’t qualified to vote yet.
That would explain a lot.
8 May: With more than 99 percent of the vote in, EMOL shows the following encouraging results.
34 of the 51 consejeros to the center-right sector.
A significant blow to the Merluzo and the comunachos. Although it is interesting that in Spain some of the media are describing the Republican party here [Chile] as “ulta-right” and the Chile Seguro party as “traditional right.”
Even in Boric’s pago chico, Magallanes (which is usually quite izquierdista) , a Republican candidate prevailed with the highest number while the Socialist-Feminist “Convergencia Social” was close behind. Those two were elected and go to the convention.
The journey to hell in a handbasket may take a little longer.
Course they are…

So in hindsight, the far left became so sure of themselves because 80% of 7.569.082 voters said yes to a new CC convention. The “not 30 pesos but 30 years”, pacos should be reformed entirely if not eliminated, violence and destruction are justified if Tellier behind the scenes to your teacher at the front of the classroom says so, all private things are capitalist and should be eliminated or seized, etc.; the far left believed the pueblo was 80% on their side on virtually their entire agenda to such an extent that their blindness to objective reality led them a la chucha.
Most likely if the Presidential election had been mandatory, the wake up to reality call would have occurred months before the Rechazo vote.
Some amusing SERVEL numbers:
Of those more than 12 millions who voted:
9,795,930 or 78.47% were actually valid ballots
“Votos Nulos” or nullified for incorrect voting or other reason… 2,119,506 or 16.98%
Blank ballots 568,673 or 4.56%
For what it’s worth.
Wow! So, this round DOUBLED turnout. Now the massive swing makes sense.
Sorry, what is a ‘paco’? Not familiar with that chilenismo.
That armed nice man or woman in the green ninja turtle-like costume who will torture, rape and kill you if he/she catches you jaywalking or tossing an innocent glass bottle filled with a useful flammable liquid capped with an innocuous rag that happens to be lit.
Actually, another joke on the leftists. The Carabineros went from their lowest historic rating during the estallido to their highest historic rating of 83% according to today’s latest poll.
Perspectives, again from Spanish media updates. Evidently additional counting.
Clumsy short translation for those perhaps challenged linguistically. Bold is mine.
"Chile 2023 Constituent Candidate Election Results … Republican Party adds one new seat after results update "
“The right-wing bloc gets 56.5% (35.5% of the extreme right of the Republican Party and 21% of the traditional Chile Seguro party). The left and center lists reached 37.5% (28.5% for Boric’s “Unidad para Chile,” and 9% Todo por Chile). The populist Partido de la Gente achieved 5.5%.”
Some random observations from the recent voting by foreigners (non citizens of Chile) .
Related to material produced by Andrés Tagle, president of the Board of Directors of the Electoral Service of Chile (SERVEL). As most of our regular listeners know, after five years of permanent residency and no disqualifying factors, a foreigner is enabled to vote here. There are at present politicians in the country such as Teodoro Ribera who are agitating for greater restrictions on voting by foreigners. One of those proposals is allowing voting in local elections at 5 years but requiring 10 years of such residency for voting at a national level, for president and parliamentary representatives.
In the last decade, the number of foreigners eligible to vote in Chile has gone from about 180,000 to about 595,000. (SERVEL indicated that for the September 2022 plebiscite that there were over 514,000 foreigners eligible to vote).
In just the period between the last September (2022) plebiscite vote, and the May 2023 election, the number of voting foreigners increased by nearly 16 percent.
Table showing growth in “the foreigner vote” in Chile. Note the high numbers for Venezuela and Haiti.
