The SA pattern of US tariffs

Anyone see a pattern here in US tariffs in South America?

and then there’s this…

https://www.rt.com/news/622389-nicaragua-russian-regions-recognition/

I am guessing that you are aware that RT News is a Russian government-controlled propaganda outlet?

Or as they say in the business, “materially misleading.”

I say that we should denounce the 26 percent effective import tariff on most US and Canadian products charged by the Boric government, and recognize how comparatively tiny or absent have been the tariffs the US has charged for Chilean imported goods.

Show me a major media outlet that is not a propaganda tool controlled by either corporations, governments or the deep state.

There used to be a Red under the bed.

Now there’s a corporation in the cupboard.

And a deep state under the divan.

Sounds like you need to get your news from Al Jazeera or Mother Jones.

Have you considered Infobae? Explain to we mortals ( and to me, a former journalist) how it is a “propaganda tool.” They seem to gore anyone’s ox. That’s what got them banned in Venezuela.

…

We are going to guess that you meant Tren de Aragua.

The transnational criminal organization, active in Chile and considered responsible for several recent homicides. Soon coming to a region near you.

Since Al Jazeera is under the control of the Islamic Qatari government, it would appear to violate your primary axiom. Any claim that it has “editorial independence” is risible.

The reason for their losing “reporters” is that many were Hamas operatives.

I think you’ll find Infobae to be considerably more objective, if that is what you are looking for.

The original post question was about US tariffs. Let’s see how that affects CL and the US.

Apparently imports of Chilean copper cathodes to the US will not be subject to the previously discussed 50 percent tariff.

Most products from Chile imported into the US will be subject to a 10 percent import tariff. The new tariff schedule will evidently nullify some benefits of the earlier Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC) between the US and Chile.

With the end of TLC effects, Chile would thus maintain an effective 26 percent tariff on many products from the US (for most Chilean territory), and higher tariff rates apply to some items, such as BB guns, electric vehicles, and distilled liquor. (Battery electric vehicles have been categorized as “luxury items”). For some imported products, Chile charges an effective tariff rate of about 60%. That is in part because Chile’s tariff schedule taxes not just product valuation but also transport and insurance costs, which results in compounding a tax upon a taxed amount.

Perhaps tariff parity is in order. Such determination would be a bit challenging since Chilean VAT/IVA is included in the effective overall tariff calculation here.

10% sounds downright friendly of the US. Thanks for explaining.

My post could have been clearer, the intent was to guess where, in South America, the rapacious nature of the US would surface and begin colonization via proxy governments,

The ideological cold war ended three decades ago. Notice how the US really did not give a damn that the commies gained control of Chile. More important is the strategy of chaos. Allow whatever forces, even play both sides, to keep a country unbalanced, ununited and in perpetual funk.

The world reserve currency and full spectrum military and surveillance control are at stake.

I personally believe Tren de Aragua is an arm of Venezuelan-Cuban policy. They are still locked in an outdated ideological war and Piñera instigated it with his interference in their politics when Chile was doing fine just laying low and playing the middle.

Regarding the tariffs, would have been great to be a fly on the wall when ICE Barbie was in town after visiting Milei. It was that meeting with the Boric government that erased the threatened 50% copper tariff and gave the green light for the continuation of Chile’s participation in the VWP.

astute observations eeuu

Mosciatti recently commented that recent Chilean political figures seem to feel that the country is too small a stage for their talents. Even before Piñera’s disastrous foray onto the world stage, we had Bachelet’s widely-criticized performance as UN HR Commissioner. Despite that failure, it looks as if she will be lobbying for the UN Secretary-General position, which is up for grabs quite soon.

Boric is another example of wider self-promotion, but his “woke” statements seem to have merely aroused the irritation of bigger nations, given Chile’s insignificance in the scheme of things.

This country never was influential, nor did it even approach the developed nation status that many here thought was imminent just a few years ago. Chileans need to get a better sense of perspective regarding their place in the world, and behave accordingly.

Indeed, but he is a naturalized citizen who has every right to an opinion and action as long as it is without the financing and help of the State (in theory). Obviously, he did not get any vengeance via a stiff tariff on Chilean copper.

The increased woke/DEI content in CL Ministry of Foreign Affairs material is frankly disgusting. It has reminded me of what I recall as a young lad in Spain:

Qué buen estómago tiene Bicoca
Lee el diario y no deboca.

You may not hear “deboca” in Chile. It was a rude way to say vomit.

Government workers here understandably tend to be a bit shy in openly criticizing Boric and his government’s growing woke tendencies and policies, but I submit it would be wrong to suggest that it only vexes those “bigger nations.” It also greatly annoys a lot of the population here. Whether that aggravation will materially help effect a change in government here remains to be seen.

RT / Russia Today is a propaganda arm of the Putin government. Basically Pravda in new clothes, Tovarich.

Funny, RT was the only major media to expose the Minneapolis shooter was transgender. The woke agenda now controls most major news media and has led to the death of the shooter and several innocent children, But the fact the shooter was transgender is not good PR for the woke agenda so their "honest " media conveniently leaves it out.

It is however on the front page of the “dishonest” RT as well as the 6 US warships, some nuclear , and 4000 US soldiers closing in on Venezuela.

Excerpt: The move comes after Washington last week sent three warships and 4,000 Marines toward Venezuela in what the White House described as part of a broader campaign against drug trafficking groups in Latin America. According to media reports, US President Donald Trump has since deployed two additional vessels: the guided-missile cruiser USS Erie and the nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Newport News, expected to arrive next week.

In response, Venezuela has deployed warships and drones to patrol its coastline.

There were dozens of media outlets that covered the transgender aspect.

Even the French.

The French, for crissake.

Newsweek didn’t avoid it:

Some of the Conservative UK media covered it rather quickly.

Infobae made mention of it whilst citing Europa Press as its source.

That aspect was covered in the media in Oz.

Argentine media certainly mentioned it.

For those unfamiliar with media-eeze, “nuclear” here refers to nuclear propulsion.
