This government

Honestly, I don’t have much faith in any government, and Jara would have been problematic in her own way. Still, I feel like there have been so many communication gaffes and own goals with this administration.

When Steiner was announced as Security Minister, my husband said she was going to be a problem. When he did his law internship at Santiago 1, he had dealings with her. She had conflicts with everyone.

What are others’ thoughts?

After only two months in office, its inevitable that errors were going to occur., but I get the impression that the media were more inclined to be more lenient with the Boric maladministration’s early days.

I would give this lot more time to sort their sh** out

Well, my husband predicted it. “Doesn’t play well with others Steinert” is out. Let’s hope they are able to short their sh*t out. What surprises me most is that security/crime was the big issue he campaigned on, but there doesn’t seem to be a plan.

Time will tell, I guess.

Murky dealings from the family of recently elected diputado republicano Alejandro Riquelme Ducci:

According to a complaint from Serviu itself, the Republican deputy’s wife omitted information in order to obtain a “vulnerable family” housing subsidy. She did not explain her relationship with her husband, with whom she registered at least four companies. The concealment of her antecedents placed her in a condition of “high housing deficit” and “overcrowding.” According to the official letter, one of the firms registers contracts and agreements with public organizations for more than 1,096 million pesos between 2007 and 2025.

This is the same parliamentarian who recently denounced similar irregularities in the Magallanes regional government.

Punta Arenas. April 13, 2026. The Deputy for Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica, Alejandro Riquelme Ducci, presented a formal complaint to the Comptroller General of the Republic, requesting an exhaustive investigation into possible extremely serious events that occurred within the Regional Government of Magallanes. The information collected reveals possible irregularities in public procurement processes that would involve the delivery of several contracts to a company with direct family ties to a senior official of the Regional Government itself.

I had hoped that Kast’s party would be a little less dishonest or hypocritical than Frente Amplio, but it looks like the same old, same old…

Entre ladrones no hay honor

Definitely the same old same old, no matter what party affiliation they have, sadly.

According to Mosciatti, this government, and Chile’s future looks bleak in all directions.

Here’s my radical solution…

Since Trump has the mentality of a predatory and crooked property developer writ large, and has already made attempts to acquire Canada and Greenland, why not put Chile up for sale, with a political status similar to Puerto Rico?

Given the seemingly incurable rottenness now present here, the US could hardly do a worse job, Trump notwithstanding. And he will be out of office in a couple of years, hopefully in favour of someone at least slightly more decent.

Or another radical solution - Privatize Codelco, which has long ceased to be Chile’s cash cow.

The latest of a long series of scandals:

Codelco ordered 6,322 workers and executives to return approximately US$14.3 million (about CLP $2 million per person) after discovering that copper production figures for the end of 2025 were artificially inflated. An internal audit concluded that 27,000 metric tons that were still in process were reported as completed, triggering the payment of bonuses for targets that were not actually met.

Considering that:

Codelco has a total debt of US$25 billion as of 2026, which has sparked discussions about potential partial privatization in Chile

and:

Codelco’s lithium profits are intended to support the company’s financial stability and operations, but there are concerns that these revenues may be used to cover financial losses rather than reinvested into building a competitive lithium sector.

A partial or complete selloff would pay off Codelco’s massive debts and rid the state of a corrupt White Elephant. But there are many vested interests that would oppose this initiative…

I definitely agree with you on Codelco. Between the corruption and debts, it’s better to sell it.
